Covenants: Sacred-Family-Law of our Lord

Contracts are promises, while covenants are oaths. The word oath means the same as the Latin word sacramentum (sacrament). Thus, covenants are sacraments. The root of the Hebrew word for "covenant oath-swearing" is sheba from the word "seven." To swear an oath means "to seven one's self" (see: Genesis 21:27-32).

Contracts exchange property, covenants exchange persons. The "word" you each pledge to the other is your name. And you each sign your name on the contract as a "sign" that you'll keep your promise.

For detail analysis of the ancient form of covenants, see: "The Meaning of Covenant". The basic outline of ancient covenants is:

• Preamble: introduces the covenant
• History: review of the relationship between the two parties
• Stipulations: obligations of the parties, along with a list of blessings and curses for upholding or breaking the covenant
• Ratification: solemn ceremony with a reading of the covenant document and eating and drinking.

Each covenant has these key features:

• Mediator: the person with whom God makes the covenant
• Role: whom the mediator represents
• Blessings: the good that God offers
• Conditions: effects/curses with any lack of the compliance
• Sign: for the celebration and awareness of the covenant  
• Form: God's family with the covenant

We used to have politicians swear on the Bible, open to the Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 28, where the blessings and the curses are recorded. We were asking them to swear to uphold the constitution or suffer the curses in those pages.

The prophets, especially Isaiah and Jeremiah, taught Israel to hope for a Messiah with "a new covenant," through which God's law is written on our hearts (see: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:8-12). Those who enter into that New Covenant through Baptism become "new creations" (see 2 Corinthians 5:17 ;Galatians 6:15 ). In the New Covenant, God sends us "a Spirit of adoption, through which we can cry, Abba, 'Father!'" (see: Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5).

God made the world in seven days as an act of cosmic oath-swearing, a "sevening of Himself" to His creation. He created in order to covenant. Covenants are more than agreements or contracts, they are sacred family bonds within the family of God. Covenants can only be broken by the death or fall of one of the parties plus a period of 40 days.

Seven Laws of Noah (one positive; six negative):

• establishment of the courts for the justice
• prohibition of any blasphemy
• prohibition of any idolatry
• prohibition of any incest
• prohibition of any bloodshed
• prohibition of any robbery
• prohibition of the eating of any flesh: cut from a living-animal

Significance of the number: 40

Moses remained close to God for 40 days to receive His law on tablets of stone (annealed m-state gold). For 40 years, the Jewish people wandered in the desert before entering into the kingdom promised by God.

Our Lord, after being baptized by St. John the Baptist, went into the desert and after 40 days of fasting, He was tempted by Satan.

Our Lord's body and soul were separated in death for 40 hours between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. During Holy Week, the Church practices the 40 Hours Devotion in memory of this time that Our Lord slept in death and descended into Hell.

Here are all the places we find 40-days in the Scriptures:

• Beginning of the Flood: It rained 40 days and nights: Gen 7:4, 12.
• End of the Flood: Forty days after sighting the tops of the mountains, Noah set forth a raven and a dove: Gen 8:6-7.
• Mourning: Joseph mourned the death of his father Jacob for a period of 40 days: Gen 49:33 - Gen 50:3.
• Mosaic-Law: Moses on Sinai for 40 days: Exo 24:18, 34:28, Deu 9:9-11.
• Mosaic-Law: Moses pleads for Israel 40 days on Sinai: Deu 9:18-25, 10:10.
• Canaan spied on for 40 days: Num 13:25, 14:34.
• Suffering: Goliath taunted Israel for 40 days: 1 Sam 17:16.
• Fasting: Elijah fasted and journeyed to Horeb for 40 days: 1 Kings 19:8.
• Suffering: Ezekiel bore the iniquity of Judah for 40 days: Eze 4:6.
• Repentance: Jonah warned Nineveh of judgment in 40 days: Jonah 3:4.
• Fasting before the Ministry: Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days: Matt 4:2, Mark 1:13, Luke 4:2.
• Before the Ascension: Jesus was seen for 40 days after His crucifixion: Acts 1:3.

Lenten-Season: 40-Days (Quadragesima)

The number forty was considered relevant for Easter preparation even earlier in ~190 A.D. when Saint Irenaeus wrote: "some think they ought to fast for one day, others for two days, and others even for several, while other reckon forty hours both of day and night to their fast."

A nearly universal 40-days of fasting in the spring (Lent = Lengthening days of spring, from Indo-European langat-tin, "long" + "day") goes back at least to 339 A.D.when Saint Athanasius, having recently travelled throughout Europe, including Rome, enjoined the people of Alexandria to observe a 40-day period of fasting prior to Easter, indicating that this was the mode now practiced throughout Christendom: " ... [W]hile all the world is fasting, we who are in Egypt should not become a laughing stock as the only people who do not fast but take pleasure in those days." In the Western Church today, Lent begins six and a half weeks before Easter, providing forty fast days when Sundays are excluded. In the Eastern Church, however, Lent begins eight weeks before Easter, since fasting is excluded on Saturdays and Sundays (Sacred Origins of Profound Things, by Charles Panati, copyright 1996, published by the Penguin Group, page 206).

40-day spring fasts are also seen around the world as part of God's preparation for His coming (The Two Babylons, by Alexander Hislop, second American edition, 1959, published in America by Loizeaux Brothers, pages 106, 107):

• Babylonia: associated with the goddess Ashtoreth/Astarte/Ishtar (origin of the word Easter), a type of Mary, the Virgin-Mother
• Mexico: "Three days after the vernal equinox .... began a solemn fast of forty days in the honour of the sun" a type of Christ, the Son. (Humboldt)
