Acidification of the Stomach

Acidifyers

  • HCl
  • Betaine HCl
  • Herbal bitters

Stomach secretion acidity (normal pH = 1.4) is important for the function of proteolytic digestive enzymes, and is the first defense against parasites.

Betaine HCl (Hydrochloric acid), produced in the stomach, is essential for proper digestion of proteins and ionization of most minerals for proper absorption in the small intestine. HCl production tends to decrease dramatically with aging, as well as with infestation of the stomach lining by Helicobacter pylori. H. pylori is also the main cause of stomach ulcers.

HCl should not be taken alone for more than about 10 days because the stomach stops producing hydrochloric acid, creating even greater dependency on supplementation. Combine it with herbal or homeopathic 'bitters' or other digestive stimulant formulas such as Digestzymes.
