L-: (definition) means Levo rotary (left rotation) effect on polarized light passing through the molecule due to the chirality (spiral shape) of the molecular structure. Because life-formed amino acids are made by enzymes which only permit the L- form amino acids from forming, D, L- forms (such as DLPA, above) are synthetic and inhibit related functional pathways. This is how DLPA inhibits pain.
