BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that stress is related to changes in the electrical resistance of the skin, neuro-muscular and other functional responses. Biofeedback procedures that monitor muscle responses and skin resistance provide useful indications of stress. Research protocols are designed to identify stimuli associated with increased and decreased stress. In many instances, this is accomplished through surrogate testing, in which the individual being assessed is not physically present.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this approach is to release biological energy through a systematic program of stress reduction.

PROCEDURE: The procedure is non-invasive and is classified as a non-significant risk. A metal probe may be touched to the skin at various points on your hands and feet in order to measure the electrical resistance of the skin. Alternatively, muscle responses are monitored by challenging muscle strength. Responses may be monitored through another individual whose stress responses have been neutralized. Such surrogate testing allows participation in this program by individuals who may benefit greatly, but are unable to visit the research facility in person on a regular basis.

SAFETY: The procedures are extremely safe because they only measure changes in skin resistance or muscle strength. The only discomfort that can be reasonably anticipated is the minimal discomfort of probe pressure against the skin in the electrodermal method.

COMPLEMENTARY PROCEDURE: This procedure is used in addition to established procedures. It is not intended to be used as an exclusive alternative. It is not a medical diagnostic or therapeutic procedure, nor does it replace appropriate health care.
