(Breakbone Fever)

This viral infection is characterized by a sudden onset of chills and fever up to 104 degrees with prostration as well as head,, eye, lumbar, legjoint and muscle pains after 3 to 15 days of incubation following a mosquito bite. The fever breaks after 2-3 days with profuse sweating, followed in a day by a second fever along with a rash. The characteristic dengue triad consists of fever, pain and rash. Low energy can last for weeks. It is caused by an Arbovirus, Group B, Flavirus (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the tropics and subtropics, worldwide, carried by mosquitoes. Cases reported on all major islands in the Hawaii-Archipelago as of summer, 2001. Children, mostly under age 10, can experience Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) with bleeding, such as nosebleeds or even subarachnoid bleeding in the brain. White blood cell counts typically drop by the second day of the fever. The kidneys can become inflamed, the liver and spleen enlarged and blood pressure reduced, especially with loss of fluid and electrolytes with vomiting.
