Leaving Hawai`i, both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, our two huge volcanic mountains, were clear from the airplane. I found tears in my eyes as I left our island to travel into the United States and particularly to Washington, D.C. I love our place on the Earth, the family and friends who share that place, and the animals in our sanctuary who provide us with so much unconditional love. In this first section of my report on the Washington trip, I will cover only the aspects of the trip that reflected what happened on September 11. The next section, as a separate email, will discuss the hearing on LFA. The 9/11 Component - To travel by air at this point in history and into Washington, D.C. is to find yourself immersed in the ripples flowing from the events of September 11. Arriving in Honolulu, I found the National Guard deployed at the security check points. Their weapons did not appear to be loaded and most of them appeared to be in their 20s. Knowing that the hijackers passed through security without giving a clue of their intent and carrying the most minimal of weapons, I could not consider the deployed National Guard as a real deterrent. The deployment does, however, provide a psychological comfort to those experiencing fear. Unless, of course, your fear is that the U.S. in slipping under greater military control, in which case the use of the National Guard at the airports can appear to be desensitizing people to using military personnel for domestic law enforcement tasks. I learned to carry my photo identification in a more readily accessible place because you are asked for it so many times at different points in the airport. Only a few days before leaving, National Airport reopened. My travel agent was able to change my reservations to arrive at National. There were few people on the flight. As we approached D.C., the captain announced that there was a new policy that prohibited anyone from leaving their seat in the last thirty minutes of the flight. There is apparently a policy that, if anyone does leave their seat, the plane is automatically diverted to Dulles. The airport itself was relatively empty compared to normal operations I had seen on previous visits to D.C. An LFA supporter arranged for me to stay at a bed and breakfast and paid the room expenses. After checking in there, I headed for the Capitol to start my rounds of congressional offices. That first day in D.C., I was taking the Metro (subway) to the Capitol. As the train approached I planned to get on, the operator sounded his horn and passed through the station without stopping. On an electronic bulletin board that normally provides the time and information about arriving trains, a red "Alert" appeared. The board then gave notice that the Southern Avenue station, located a few stops prior to the one where I waited, was closed for a "police situation" and that Metro was arranging for bus bypass transportation. Fortunately, I was traveling in the opposite direction. I learned later that a man had entered the train without paying. Approached by a Metro supervisor, he said something in a foreign language and then sprayed a clear liquid inside the car. The police wrestled the man off the train. He pulled a gun and fired one shot without hitting anyone. The police then stripped and hosed him down with bleach in case he had been using a biological agent. Fifteen police and Metro workers also exposed were hosed down as well. It turned out the liquid was cleaning fluid. Meanwhile, the train had locked down the exposed car and continued to other stations. When someone realized that it might be carrying toxins or other dangerous agents, Metro emptied all cars and sent the train to the main yards with no further stops. The man told hospital workers he could not remember anything except that the police attacked him. In my days studying the National Security State, part of that research involved mind control programs run by intelligence agencies. The bizarre behavior of this man, whom a doctor described as a well groomed employee of a moving company, brought that research back to mind. At the metaphysical level, I thought of demons released into the world to spread fear and remembered a good exercise to help reduce the negative impacts of history. During the period when the Light Worker Center operated as a physical space in downtown Hilo, Hawai`i, we collected many messages, stories, and other interesting writings. These are available on the web. One of particular interest at this time is titled Releasing Negative Energy and appears at http://www.ilhawaii.net/~light/nocurse.html I would encourage anyone open to the idea to perform the exercise offered in that piece. The remaining collected writings are available through a link at that URL. (Note: the LFA link you eventually find at that site is the URL prepared for the March 2000 litigation and has not been updated.) Arriving at the Capitol, I found a heavy police presence and barricaded streets. Guards in the various office buildings I visited were obviously in a very serious mood. I wrapped myself in white light, kept a smile on my face, and sent open hearted friendliness to everyone I encountered. During the visit, the friendliest creatures I met were dogs. There was Jake, the black lab bomb sniffer, and Scoobie, the chocolate lab bomb sniffer. Elvis, the bulldog out for a walk. The pit bull at the B&B, to whom I was never formally introduced. And a number of other canine denizens of D.C. Their job of keeping the humans in touch with their hearts is certainly more difficult these days. After my first visits on the Hill (discussed in the second part of this report), I went to dinner at a nearby restaurant. At the next table, a man I believe to be a member of Congress was discussing the anti-terrorist bill with his dinner companions. He was making that argument that people were too sensitive about civil rights. In his phrase, Congress needed to "sacrifice esoteric things around the edge [of civil liberties] to improve security." He spoke of the need to conduct multi-jurisdictional wire taps and to implement the "trap and trace" type of tap to determine what web sites people accessed on the Internet. He said that what one computer said to another computer was simply a business record of the telephone company and should not be considered private information. He wanted law enforcement to be able to simply "certify" to a court that the investigation was a matter of possible importance to a criminal investigation, rather than meet the higher standard of having probable cause to implement a tap. When the food arrived, the congressman prayed aloud for God to provide support for what needed to be done. After finishing my meal, I walked over to the table and excused myself for interrupting. I told the congressman that a lot of people were praying that he and others would be very careful in what they did. I said that my training was as a historian and that historically everything that Hitler did when he came to power had been made legal before he got there. He asked me where I taught. I said I didn't and went on my way. [Congress passed an anti-terrorism bill that most members had never seen before the vote. A compromise that had been worked out by Democrats and Republicans was tossed out at the last minute to be substituted by a bill the White House wanted. Too few stood up to question and fewer to vote against.] The next day on the Metro, I heard that Metro Center, the hub of the operation was closed. Apparently there was a smell in the air that might be natural gas, so they closed that station. That same day, I was on my way to the Washington Post when I passed an office building where alarms were going off and everyone was evacuating the building. The third day, while I was meeting with an aid to Senator Akaka in the Hart Senate Office Building, the alarms went off and everyone was evacuated. Later that day, I was on an elevator in a congressional office building with two people in the military who were apparently lobbying on the Hill. One said "He doesn't want the Pentagon to be able to tell civilian agencies what to do." I guess civilian supremacy over the military is to be another victim of 9/11. That evening, I spoke with an old friend who recounted a tale about a psychic she knew in San Antonio. A few weeks before the last election, the psychic told her that Bush would steal the election through manipulation of votes, blocking people from voting, and other means. While my friend had respect for the psychic's previous information, she was highly skeptical about this latest prognostication. Then came the "election." After the 9/11 attacks, my friend spoke again with the psychic, who told her that the Bush administration knew about the attack before hand, that this information would come out, and that the exposure of this information would destroy this administration. Stay tuned. My departure brought me back to National Airport early in the morning. I looked around for some place to have breakfast and found the only place even close to providing a meal was in a different part of the airport than my departure area and inside the gates of that section. When I approached, the security officer checked that I had a ticket for departure because only ticketed passengers are now allowed inside the gate areas. When she saw that my ticket was for an airline in a different part of the airport, she asked why I was coming into that area. I told her I was trying to find some breakfast. She said I could go in and should put my ticket away or the further security would turn me back. At the next check point, I was extensively screened by two people while a third supervisor watched. I was wearing an old cowboy shirt from my Texas days that had snaps which set off the metal detector wand, so the security officer asked to pat me down. All this for a bagel and egg. I continually sent out vibrations of peace and friendliness into that city on the edge of paranoia. I also was glad to leave. I was even more happy to walk down the steps in the Hilo airport and see Mary Rose waiting. Arriving back at the sanctuary, I was surrounded by the trustee dogs -- those who are so well behaved that they are free to roam. Thelma and Louise, two sharpei mix puppies found by the side of the road with little hair left from mange, bloated bellies from worms, and high fever from infection. They now have beautiful coats, are healthy, and are already trustees. Kiko, the elderly terrier trustee, is the nanny for Thelma and Louise and watches over them as they gambol about. Bear, another senior citizen, hangs around outside the catteries panting and roaming back and forth watching the kittens at play. Lehua, a rottweiler/ridgeback mix, and Dottie, mostly dalmatian, came with the property and supervise the overall operation of the sanctuary. Poppie, a papillion mix, supervises the cats in the house. Returning to their vibrations helped to shed the remaining tensions for the D.C. visit. With 39 dogs and 60 cats in residence, there is a lot of love to go around here. Just what the world needs. With this email, we invite you all to share in that energy.
