Prostate Gland:Genistein (Anaheim, California) The phytoestrogen genistein is probably the ingredient responsible for the prostate-protecting effect of soy foods. The health benefits of soy phytoestrogens have already been recognized, and researchers at the UC (Davis) Cancer Center have discovered that genistein, in particular, inhibits growth of prostate tumors in mice. In cell cultures, genistein stimulates the activity of the gene p21. This gene, in addition to regulating cell growth, also inhibits development of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), which stimulate tumor growth. A study of patients with slow-growing prostate cancer will soon begin. In addition to their other medication, the patients will receive five grams of genistein per day.
