Repertory: For the past 20 years as a practicing nutritional consultant and doctor of optometry, both here and abroad, I have been searching for answers to clinical problems that we all face every day. I didn't believe, for example, that watching cataracts get worse year after year until they were 'ripe' for surgery was the best possible service I could provide my incipient cataract patients. After exploring the literature, visiting a number of colleagues on the forefront of nutritional therapies in eye care, and attending many seminars both by doctors of optometry as well as other health professionals, I found that indeed I could help most of my patients improve the clarity and health of their eyes. In 1986, I published my initial results showing improved crystalline lens clarity on biomicroscopy and contrast sensitivity measures, plus better distance and near visual acuity and even enhanced ocular circulation as detected in the low spatial frequencies on contrast sensitivity. Since then, my interest in nutrition and preventive medicine has only increased. I have studied and refined European methods of what is referred to there as Biological Medicine, and applied them extensively in my own vision and nutrition practice. I now feely strongly that natural health methods belong in the primary care optometric practice if we are to provide the kind of preventive care that our patients need. Recent studies have shown that our patients are in fact seeking out this level of care already, with more patient visits to alternative medicine than for conventional care. How to Use the Starfire RepertoryThe Starfire Repertory chart is designed to provide you with quick reference information about the common clinical applications of Starfire products within the context of your practice. For example, look at the Eye Segment & Visual Functions chart. In the left hand column, find the structural or functional area most affected in the case at hand. Thus, if the dominant feature of the case is accommodative infacility, look for the row labelled "Accommodation" at the left. If statistical analysis of your vision analysis findings shows that convergence ranges deviate furthest from mean values, look for the row labelled "Binocularity." For further examples, see the chart below. The various homeopathic pharmaceutical, nutritional, herbal and other products are abbreviated at the top of the chart. A key to these abbreviations is also enclosed, although this will not be needed once you have familiarized yourself with the various products through clinical use. All products marked with a black dot (•) are recommended to be taken together as an initial clinical trial program for the case at hand. However, further analysis of the case history and findings may provide valuable information that could lead you to deviate from this program. Other products that might be considered are marked '1' for additional primary causal remedies, '2' for supportive remedies, and '3' for palliative remedies. A blank square indicates a very slight or unknown relationship. As an example, you may be primarily concerned about ocular hypertension, yet the patient history may indicate that reduced scotopic visual performance is the chief entering complaint. It would then be prudent to combine aspects of the program for "IOP" with those for "Night Vision" to design an individualized program. You might even further tailor the program based on supplements the patient is already taking (e.g. don't generally exceed 50,000 I.U. of supplemental vitamin A for more than 6 months), dietary history, clinical nutritional tests, biofield analysis results, etc. Thus, while the chart presents a simple protocol approach for easy clinical application, final recommendations must be left to the considered judgement of the clinician in consultation with the patient. The information on the chart is intended merely as a guide to the clinical applications found most useful in one practitioner's experience and is not intended as a prescription or treatment for any disease. The natural products and environmental modifications are intended merely to correct sources of stress on the organism, such as nutritional deficiencies, electromagnetic radiation stress, etc., or to stimulate and facilitate the self-healing capacities of the organism itself. The human body is itself a profound instrument for self-healing, and all credit for any results obtained with simple natural supports such as these truly belong to its creator. However, the cooperation of the patient is nevertheless of utmost importance in achieving the end result of optimal health. Factors such as diet, exercise, water intake, and other health habits will change only with the efforts of the individual, or sometimes the whole family. Likewise, the insight and coaching of the doctor who provides guidance in the self-healing process are invaluable, as few individuals have the objectivity, experience and clarity to direct their own healing without encountering unnecessary pitfalls in the process. Together, it is remarkable what this healing triad of doctor, patient and creator can accomplish.
