Kidney & Bladder:

Cranberry Juice Prevents Urinary Tract Infections

Oulu, Finland: Women who suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections can reduce their risk of infection by drinking cranberry juice. A Finnish study proves that 50 ml per day of the blood-red juice, a vitamin C gold mine, is enough to do the trick. The researchers conducted a study of 150 women who had suffered previously from urinary tract infections caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). Participants were divided into three groups: The first group was asked to drink 50 ml of cranberry juice per day for six months; the second group drank 100 ml of Lactobacillus drink five days out of each week for a year, and the third group of women did nothing. After six months, the number of infections was evaluated. Urinary tract infections recurred in 36% of the women who had taken no preventive measures in the interim. The lactobacillus drink was also completely ineffective, with 39% of that group experiencing repeated infection. Cranberry juice, however, was clearly effective; only 16% of the women who drank it experienced a relapse. (BMJ 2001, vol. 322, p. 1571).
