:Microwater-Units:

Water ionization was developed in Japan in the early 1950's, and on January 15, 1966 water ionization was approved as a medical device for health improvement by the Japanese Ministry of Health. Research at Shiga University of Medical Science and Ohkura National Hospital show the optimum pH for drinking is 8.5 to 9.5 with an ORP of -250 mV to -350 mV. Most filtered and bottled waters are acidic, and tap water is usually an oxidizing agent with an ORP about +500 mV. Handheld electronic ORP and pH meters are available for about $101 and $67 respectively to easily confirm these measurements, though these are not essential to achieve health benefits from electron-rich (anti-oxidant) alkaline mineral water produced by electrolysis using platinum coated titanium electrodes. At pH 10, 5 x 10^20 extra oxygen is carried by this restructured water.

Consider life and cost of replacement filter cartriges when calculating operating costs of various units.

 

Faucet diverter valve

 Flow-through units: pH ~5.5 to ~10.9, depending on water source, flow rate and optional minerals added in mineral port. Note that 0.1 micron or finer filters can clog up quickly with any sediment in the intake water and may need to be replaced every 3 months, well before gallon ratings are reached, unless an in-line sediment filter is added (cost: ~$21+). Added in-line filters must not drop water pressure below functional range of unit.
Summary Analysis: While Korean units tend to be lower price, most people prefer the quality of Japanese units, though new 2003 Korean models have introduced patented FIR technology on the MicroLite ($550) and Melody ($719) models to enhance negative ion generation. We have not seen these units in operation yet. The Akai Water Ionizer ($995) offers built-in UV water treatment, which we recommend for those with catchment water systems. Our Microstructured Water Ionizer ($795) made by Panasonic's parent company, Matsushita is popular for its small footprint on the kitchen counter, while an IonPia Undersink Ionizer ($985) installed by a plumber is another alternative for space optimization. At the high end, the Protec with a salt pump ($1749) can produce a continuous flow of pH 2.5 superoxide water at 1 liter per minute, but our Superoxide unit ($995) is dedicated to serve this need at a lower price point.
