These are scavenged, i.e. quenched, by electron donors called antioxidants. Oxidation is contributed to by hypoxia (oxygen deficiency) as well as toxicity and all forms of stress. Oxidation is one of the main pathways of injury, aging and degeneration, along with glycation and carbonylation.
