Naka-Ima: Teachers:

Jaime Campbell

"Since 1969 I have pursued scholarly and experiential research into evolutionary studies focusing on the transformation of consciousness and its impact on relational dynamics.

My major at the University of Hawaii was The Integration of Asian Philosophy and Psychology with Western Society. Later I studied Raja Yoga at an Ashram in India, participated in numerous Buddhist meditation retreats, became a Doctor of Oriental Medicine.

I applied what I was learning to a variety of enterprises: As a member of the collective which owned and operated the Woman's Building of the Bay Area, while living in a land based community in New Mexico, in managing numerous businesses over the past 20 years.

After 5 years of working with Nexus, a business which produced transformational courses I teamed up with Deborah Riverbend to create Naka-Ima, which at this time has been in operation for six years.

My vision of the evolutionary potential within groups has been affirmed repeatedly and I am currently writing a book addressing my own profound experiences of personal and group awakening."

Deborah Riverbend

"The most prominent theme of my life has been following my spirit and excitement, This has led me to teach and create alternative programs in NYC schools, live on a kibbutz, raise my son on a lesbian commune, travel in Asia and India, hand build my adobe home, study in a doctoral program for experimental education at Harvard University, teach transformational courses while living with a staff of twenty, practice meditation, organize for the anti nuclear and farm workers movements, create and teach Naka-Ima with my visionary partner Jaime Campbell.

Through these experiences and others, I've increased my capacity to create joy, aliveness and community. I've discovered that by honestly interacting with myself and others all barriers disappear."

Rae Luscombe

After 10 years in a yoga ashram with her best friend, Roger, they gave birth to two incredible boys and so began the journey into the real world of spirit with Calvin & Sean as guides. Sean and Calvin grew up attending Naka-Ima workshops. They are great with people and boy can they dance... Actually Calvin even helped Jaime create some of the material in the higher level training.

Rae is shown here with her assistant, Glen (a.k.a. the wizard). Rae has studied with the founders Jaime and Deborah for over 6 years. In fact she was their first student-teacher.

"I had many experiences with psychotherapy processes, read a lot of books on the subject of personal growth and communication but I still felt something was missing. I met Deborah Riverbend in 1992 in Nelson, B.C. She told me she taught people to "let go and be free of their attachments." I knew I needed to do it. I was resistant however, I took the first plunge into Naka-Ima later that year and knew instinctively that I was drawn to play and teach this work. It was the first experience of desire for a vocation that I had ever felt.

Then I met Jamie Campbell whose incredible mind I adore and I felt that desire to be involved even stronger. Each time Jamie was starting a new level of this work, I was there. I attended or assisted at every course she and Deborah taught for 6 years.

During that time I assisted at every Naka-Ima workshop as well as the Practice and Expansion. I was invited to teach with Deborah many times in the last few years. This experience was invaluable. Deborah is a unique individual with strength and tenacity matched only by her wisdom, love and caring.

When Jamie brought all of us to the Big Island of Hawaii for the first "Vacations that Matter" I felt my second draw of desire to be in this wonderful place. A health issue brought me back to Hawaii where I met the man of my dreams, the wizard, and in these past 3 years I've been attending 1 or 2 courses a year to keep in touch with my community of Naka-Ima family in B.C., Oregon and New York, and I've taught about 1 course per year. Now I'm ready to teach more. Let's play!

Larry Kaplowitz and Karin Iona Sundberg have been members of Lost Valley Educational Center, a land-based intentional community and nonprofit learning center, since 1994. Larry and Karin met in 1984, where they were both fulltime staff and teachers for Direct Centering, a personal growth training from which Naka-Ima evolved. Married for nearly ten years, they have two children, who have been rigorously training them in compassion, service, listening, and letting go.

In addition to teaching Naka-Ima, Larry is an artist, designer, and writer, has served as Lost Valley's program coordinator, and is associate editor and art director for their nationally distributed magazine, Talking Leaves: A Journal of Our Evolving Ecological Culture.

Karin's life is focused on spirituality and healing through ritual, massage, herbs, and Nature. At Lost Valley, she acts as informal counselor, mediator, and listener. She has manifested herself as a compassionate teacher willing to publicly explore her own vulnerability and be a role model of self honesty.

Larry and Karin began working with Deborah Riverbend and Jaime Campbell, who developed Naka-Ima in its present form, in 1996. They are especially passionate about working with community groups, facilitating harmonious, loving, nurturing, synergistic, and free flowing relationships.
